What is the effect of physical activity on depression?

Physical activity is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events, as well as reduced incidence of anxiety and depression.

The World Health Organization suggests 150 minutes of regular physical activity per week.

In a study, which included more than 50000 individuals, it was demonstrated that those meeting the physical activity guidelines had a 23.5% reduction in the 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease.

It is interesting that the benefits of physical activity on cardiovascular disease were more than twice as great among individuals with pre-existing depression.

This finding suggests that a significant portion of the overall health benefits derived from exercise is attributed to its beneficial effect on psychology.
