Sedentary Behaviors and Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is defined as the absence of chronic conditions such as heart failure and other physical or mental impairments in advanced age.

It is well established that physical activity is a key component of healthy aging and cognition.

This is nicely demonstrated in a recent study, where participants who were more sedentary were less likely to age healthfully.

Specifically, for each additional 2 hours of TV watching per day there was a 12% reduction in likelihood of healthy aging.

The beneficial effect of exercise is shown by the fact that for each additional 1 hour of moderate to vigorous activity there was a 14% increase in the likelihood of healthy aging.
