Reconsidering screening and supplementation of Vitamin D

According to recently published guidelines, the general practice of screening the general population for Vitamin D levels needs to be reconsidered.

The newly presented evidence-based guidelines advise that people who may benefit from vitamin D supplementation are:

  • Children aged 1-18 years, in order to maintain normal musculoskeletal development, prevent rickets and potentially lower the risk for recurrent respiratory tract infections
  • Pregnant people, in order to lower the risk for maternal and fetal or neonatal complications
  • Adults older than 75 years to lower the risk for mortality
  • Adults with prediabetes to lower the risk for type 2 diabetes
