Patients with arterial hypertension should eat more fruits and vegetables
Hypertension-related chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease mortality are increasing despite focus on pharmacologic strategies.
Diets high in fruits and vegetables are associated with lower blood pressure, reduced cardiovascular risk, and improved kidney health.
This is nicely demonstrated in a recent trial. The trial supports routine albuminuria measurement in patients with primary hypertension and fruits and vegetables as foundational, not adjunctive, to pharmacologic management.
We must increase our efforts to incorporate dietary interventions into patient management and more specifically make healthy diets more accessible to populations at increased risk for kidney and cardiovascular disease.
